This cultivar is a member of the Passion Fruit family that we are all familiar with. It is also a medicinal plant that has been cultivated in the Anjili trees by the medical families of Kerala since ancient times.
Rich in protein, fiber, iron, calcium and phosphorus, celery is an excellent remedy for lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and stomach ailments.
A rare crop with a life span of up to 200 years, its beautiful flowers and fruits are not only a decoration for the kitchen garden but also a good asset.
Cultivation method
Propagation is by seeds and cuttings. Seedlings can be planted in pits measuring 2 feet in length, width and depth by mixing topsoil, dry cow dung, compost and neem cake. When it is not raining, it should be well watered daily. Sky cucumber seedlings should be allowed to spread as soon as they sprout. Although it can be spread on trees, it is better to spread it in pandals to pluck the fruits.
Solid organic manures and growth accelerators can be applied alternately. Seedlings planted with twigs will start flowering and fruiting within a year.
Flowering and fruiting all seasons, but most fruits are produced in summer.
Uses
Sky cucumbers, which weigh up to 2 kg, can be used as a young vegetable and as a fruit after about three months of ripening.
The green fruits turn yellow when ripe. When ripe fruits are cut, they have a thick fleshy core like papaya on the outside and pulp and seeds like passion fruit on the inside.
Cucumbers are said to have a good sweetness to the pulp, but these fruits are mostly used as juices to sweeten the taste of the passion fruit. These fruits are also good for making jellies, jams, fruit salads and ice cream.
